Whatever your reason, be it cosmetic or simply functionality, you’re considering a dental implant. But what exactly are dental implants? What are the risks and side effects? And how much is this whole thing going to cost? These are great questions that we get asked all the time! Here’s what you need to know.

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a “fake tooth”, often made of titanium or similar alloys, that replaces dead, decaying, or already extracted teeth.  Unlike dentures which suction to the gums or are fastened with clips much like your coat, dental implants are surgically interfaced with the bone of the jaw or skull. In this way, the teeth look and act just like your teeth would! You can chew, floss, talk, and smile with teeth that behave exactly like normal teeth do.

Risks and Side Effects

As with all surgical procedures, there’s risks and side effects that should be taken into account before getting a dental implant. Some side effects that can occur include infection, damage to surrounding teeth, and potential nerve damage, which can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your natural teeth, gums, lips or chin.

Having a knowledgeable, experienced doctor is the best way to avoid these unwanted side effects. Make sure your doctor is the right doctor for you!

What are the Costs?

The costs for dental implants vary widely. Factors include what state you’re in, if your insurance will participate, the materials you choose, as well as the experience of the doctor and clinical staff involved. As a general rule, dental implants can cost (per tooth) between $1,000 on the low end and upwards of $3,000 on the high end. That means if you need an entire arch done (16 teeth) it could cost upwards of $48,000. Yikes!

Luckily, a lot of the time insurance covers dental implants. However, it is crucial that you call your insurance and make sure your plan covers the implants; you don’t want to be in the office and have the financial advisor say, “That will be $45,000. Would you like to pay with cash or card?”. Thank heavens for insurance!

Summary

Dental implants are a great way to improve your quality of life, from more self confidence to finally being able to eat your favorite meal without difficulty. Dental implants do come with risks, but if you trust your doctor and have done your research, you can be confident that the side effects will be minimal. Implants can be expensive, but with the right insurance that shouldn’t hold you back.
